Is not the reservation for backward classes but ‘vote bank’ politics?

In simple words, this means that reservation is a bait to lure the consolidated votes of backward classes whose numbers are too big to be ignored. But this is a false accusation.


  1. Reservation is not an enticement. It is a solution brought in for the welfare of weaker sections of our society.
  2. Adult franchise in a democracy is the right imparted to the people to elect representatives who would implement policies that would serve the interests of people. In fact if people use this right consciously they have the capacity to keep a proper check on the government.


In a monarchy people do not have the right to elect the king. In a democracy this right is given to the people. Politics influences each and every aspect of the life of the people. Vote by its capacity to influence politics, is a power in disguise for the people who use it.  Vigilant citizens, by putting this power into proper use, can force the rulers of the country to implement policies that would serve the interests of people. Thus reservation is a policy which serves the interests of 85 % of the population. If implementation of this policy influences the votes of 85 % of the population then there is nothing wrong about it. The mindset which refers to the voting right of majority of the people as ‘vote bank’ is a mindset which is antidemocratic and which treats the people specially bahujans with utter disgust
