Supreme Court Stays OBC Reservations |

Thursday, March 29 2007 The Supreme Court called for stay on the reservations for OBCs in IITs, IIMs and Post Graduate medical science courses till further orders A bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta.
According to the Government notification OBC candidates were supposed to get 27.5 per cent reservation in admission to educational institutions from the academic session of 2007--2008.
The court noted, ''We are of the view that the impugned notification and enforcing the reservation for OBCs in the educational institutions must be put on hold as the Government has failed to provide any authentic or reliable data to justify its policy of reservation.'' The Court told that the 1931 census could not be a determinative factor for identifying the OBCs for the purpose of providing reservation The hearing on the matter was suspended till the third week of August.
"The Center has to determine who are the socially and economically backward people of India, before the Central Educational Institutions Act can be given effect," the Bench stated
